This picture shows the Charter made by King James I for the Virginia Company of London. This charter authorized the Virginia Company of London to sail to and begin to colonize Jamestown in attempt to find gold and resources. The charter sates that the colony they govern will go by the same rules as the current English government in England. Also written in the charter were the 7 presidents that were to run the colony, one of whom was John Smith.
This picture shows the conflict between the English colonists and the Native Americans. Right from the beginning when the English colonists arrived at Jamestown there was conflict with them and the Native Americans who had previously owned the land. This conflict lasted for a few years until each side agreed to sign a peace treaty sealed with the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. This didn't last long, there not soon after became more conflict resulting in a majority of Native American deaths.
This picture shows the "Starving Time" In Jamestown. The Starving Time began directly after John Smith left to go back to England after suffer and injury due to a gunpowder "accident". After Smith left the colony went back to the way it was, barbaric and without structure. This lead to the death of a majority of the people living in the colony due to starvation and disease.
This picture shows the English-Pequot war in 1637. This war happened shortly after the First Thanksgiving between the Native Americans and the English. The whites abused the Indians rights to territory and began to treat them poorly. In the end the English allied with Naragansett Indians to take out virtually all of the Pequot tribe.
This is a picture of Roger Williams, a Salem minister in the early mid 1600's in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He is significant because he was one of the many extremists who came to the colony. The extremists were subject to capital punishment or banishment, like in the case of Roger Williams. Williams was banished to Rhode Island and later created the first ever colony that had the freedom to practice any religion.
This is a picture of Sir Edmund Andros, the governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony in the later 1600's. Andros is representative of an anger Massachusetts Bay colony, on the verge of revolt. With Andros' new policies on random taxation and restriction of courts, the people of the colony were extremely irate. This shows a time of frustration were if it were not for revolts in old England the colony may have fallen apart
This picture shows the Indentured Servants contract. Indentured Servants came before and lead to race based slavery. Indentured Servants became to much of a problem for the famers, they were decently expensive, they could gain there freedom and they received freedom dues. Since they required so much, when the colonists found out about race based slavery they took to it quickly because they didn't have to pay them anything and they became their slave owners "property".
This picture shows the horrible conditions on the slaves ships that went through the middle passage to Colonial America. They packed as many people as possible on to each ship. The living conditions in these ships were horrible and this lead to the constant breakout of disease, which lead to an average death of 20% of the slaves being transported
This picture is one of General George Washington. George Washington is responsible for the start of the French Indian war. He and his men attacked a French patrol in may 1754 in the Battle of Jummonville Glen at the base of the Ohio River Basin. Washington and his men were victorious in this ambush but were less fortunate when the French came back with reinforcements.
This is a picture of General Edward Braddock. General Braddock, a British general, is know for his horrible military skills in the French-Indian war. His poor tactics lead him to be defeated in Fort Duquesne were they encountered a small French-Indian army and were Braddock was mortally wounded.
This is a picture of the British leader William Pitt. Pitt become the foremost leader in 1757 and focused mostly on the war efforts in the Quebec-Montreal area. His first move was to send a powerful expedition to take Louisbourg in 1757, which led to a victory. He then chose James Wolfe for his next big expedition that also turned out to be a success that led to the British victory.
This picture shows the battles fought throughout the French-Indian War. It shows how before the war the French had a lot of territory in the New World but after they were forced to leave. The British victory was sealed with the signing Treat of Paris on February 10th 1763.
